KVGM “The Last Wave” (3/22/20)

Do you hear that sound? Can you feel it? The cool ocean breeze in your hair, the salt on your tongue. It’s the smooth crash of the Last Wave on KVGM with your host, Hammock, bringing you thirty minutes of the best video game jams(z) from all your favorite composers and consoles, each and every week from our beachside studio on sunny Aqua City Island. Sit back, relax, and get ready to catch…the Last Wave.

The KVGM studio is closed in order to keep everyone safe, including the summer interns…but the jams keep coming. If you’re stuck in isolation, hopefully these tracks will help calm some of your anxiety or inspire you to throw a one person dance party. Remember, wash your hands, no high fives, and jam out! (actually, jam in…as in, indoors) The request line is still open so keep those favorites coming, and we’ll be sure to play them on the show.

This week, we’re keeping the energy up…but we’re also bringing it down when it needs to be brought back to down. Everybody needs a little extra energy these days but you don’t want to overexert yourself, especially as the planet continues to crumble all around us. But we’ve always got sultry visual novels to keep us preoccupied while the world burns. Hey, let’s come together, make some smart decisions, and try to save our future, our children’s future, our pet’s future…the future of all living organisms because, one way or another, the Earth will save itself from us. And with that, enjoy the jams!

This week, we’ve got a heavy dose of jams, which is exactly what the doctor ordered. Sure, we’re living in scary times – even Aqua City Island isn’t immune from the current state of the world. But at least, the Last Wave can provide a little bit of distraction, lulling you into the sweet and sultry embrace of the smoothest video game music on the planet. Come sail away with us!

Enjoy the jams this week, there’s plenty to get your day going in the right direction. And if you want extra Hammock action, check out Pixelated Audio‘s latest episode, featuring music from the Playstation game, Kaze no Notam. We’ve featured a track from the game on the Last Wave but we take a deeper dive, exploring all that hot air balloon simulation has to offer. Thanks to Bryan and Gene for having me on, it was a lot of fun and the soundtrack is very chill and unique.

Speaking of the anthropomorphic craze in kids’ cartoons in the ’80s/’90s, how many listeners remember Battle Beasts? I collected them as a young Hammock, as well as M.U.S.C.L.E. in their plastic garbage bins. Of course, my parents sold them in a garage sale when I was off in College World and I will never forgive them for as long as I live (kidding). Biker Mice From Mars wasn’t something I was into but I did enjoy the Cowboys of Moo Mesa.

Let’s throw a question out there to the listener: if you could name your dream pasture, what would you name it? Mellow Meadows is where all the chill horses hang out on Aqua City Island, eating hay and running in the fields. When I was a little Hammock, I rode a lot of horses…as a bigger Hammock, I don’t ride as many but still enjoy it when given the opportunity. But I do not enjoy taxi cab rides, nor do I want to simulate being a taxi cab driver. BUT THAT’S WHAT THE JAMS ARE FOR!

Someone once asked me, “Hey Hammock, what’s makes a jam a smooth jam?” and I had to think about it for a minute. I had to consider all the possibilities. Because it’s true…a jam can be a jam but still not be a smooth jam. I think it’s the right balance of a good beat, some kind of brass instrument, the guitar shouldn’t be overwhelming, and last but not be least, you should not feel anxious listening to it. Plenty of video game music out there makes me feel anxious but when you pop in a smooth jam, all that anxiety melts away and you’re left with something so special…it’s worth of the Last Wave.

Another week, another half-hour dose of SMOOTH~! — this time, we visit Fox Junction for a completely chill 90’s-esque jam, we play non-golf golf tracks, hit up that beautiful Bandai WonderSwan, and passive-aggressively explain to our virtual roommate that pantry space is limited. And remember,  love is a beach…sometimes…

Butlers with magic talking guns? I mean, come on, it’s such a great concept…not only are you a butler with a gun…you’re a butler with a magic gun. That speaks to you. Wow. Hollywood has seemingly run out of fresh ideas but geez, an adaptation of Bullet Butlers on the big screen is guaranteed $$$$$. Casting Gerard Butler seems obvious. Look, big-time Hollywood producers out there who listen to the show,  hit us up…kvgmradio@gmail.com…let’s make this happen and get filthy rich together!
