KVGM “The Last Wave” (5/17/20)

Do you hear that sound? Can you feel it? The cool ocean breeze in your hair, the salt on your tongue. It’s the smooth crash of the Last Wave on KVGM with your host, Hammock, bringing you thirty minutes of the best video game jams(z) from all your favorite composers and consoles, each and every week from our beachside studio on sunny Aqua City Island. Sit back, relax, and get ready to catch…the Last Wave.

While parts of the world are attempting to return to some form of normalcy, it’s still business as usual here at the Last Wave, as we keep pumping out the smooth jams for YOU! This week, we give a little extra love to the Nintendos 64 and DS, while giving normal love to the Nintendo Wii. Also a shout out to special guest host of KVGM’s “Pixel Vibration”, Oke, and their newest radio venture, Dream Console, a VGM-centric show on Noods Radio. Check it out!

Streets of Rage 4 came out last week, which is the first game I’ve been super excited about playing since Zelda: Breath of the Wild. My wife and I have been beatin’ thugs up and corrupt cops…and I love the fact that you can customize your food. My wife always seems to hit me with her special “on accident” and gulps down food at FULL HEALTH! Good grief…but the soundtrack has some jams that will definitely be making an appearance on the Last Wave, get ready.

Mas jams, mas mahjong and golf, and detective games, a little Wham! inspired tune and of, course, a golem made out of potatoes chilling lakeside. What more can you ask for? Once again, I’ll plug my appearance on the recent Rhythm and Pixels episode, where we played a ton of chill late 80’s/early 90’s situational jams and spitballed hypothetical sitcom scenarios. Love those guys!

Enjoy the show, we’ve got everything from race car driving to golf to kanji training to ultimate brain games. But also, if you’re a big fan of video game music that could double as sitcom opening themes, be sure to check out the next episode of Rhythm and Pixels, where I will be jamming out with Rob and Pernell to some handpicked cheesy goodness. It was a blast to hang out and we came up with some pretty great hypothetical sitcom scenarios.

This is a pretty emotional episode – very serious at times but with an underlying lightheartedness. In fact, if you listen closely, you can hear a wild turkey in the background. Yes, that’s right, we’ve got a ton of wild turkeys on Aqua City Island. Running around, being crazy turkeys. But stay safe out there, stay indoors but also remember it’s not a prison. Talk walks, enjoy nature…as long as there isn’t a bunch of other people enjoying nature in the same spot. And, of course, enjoy the jams!

Allergies kicked my butt this week but hey, spring is here, the flowers are in bloom, the weather is warming up. And sure, we may not be able to go outside and play but that doesn’t we can’t celebrate. Here at the Last Wave, we’re welcoming spring with open arms and tons of smooth jams, from your dad’s favorite sport to my sister’s favorite sport to Jimmy “The Whirlwind” White’s favorite sport. Lots of sports, loads of chill jams, come and hang out with us from a distance…even though Hammock sounds like he’s about to fall asleep.

The KVGM studio is closed in order to keep everyone safe, including the summer interns…but the jams keep coming. If you’re stuck in isolation, hopefully these tracks will help calm some of your anxiety or inspire you to throw a one person dance party. Remember, wash your hands, no high fives, and jam out! (actually, jam in…as in, indoors) The request line is still open so keep those favorites coming, and we’ll be sure to play them on the show.

This week, we’re keeping the energy up…but we’re also bringing it down when it needs to be brought back to down. Everybody needs a little extra energy these days but you don’t want to overexert yourself, especially as the planet continues to crumble all around us. But we’ve always got sultry visual novels to keep us preoccupied while the world burns. Hey, let’s come together, make some smart decisions, and try to save our future, our children’s future, our pet’s future…the future of all living organisms because, one way or another, the Earth will save itself from us. And with that, enjoy the jams!
