KVGM “The Last Wave” (7/14/19)

Do you hear that sound? Can you feel it? The cool ocean breeze in your hair, the salt on your tongue. It’s the smooth crash of the Last Wave on KVGM with your host, Hammock, bringing you thirty minutes of the best video game jams(z) from all your favorite composers and consoles, each and every week from our beachside studio in sunny Aqua City Island. Sit back, relax, and get ready to catch…the Last Wave.

We’re well past our half-year anniversary and boss rushin’ straight for the big ONE. We’re clearing scenarios, riding camels, strollin’ right on down to the harbor lounge, where all our futbol dreams will likely die in a pint of ale. But let’s hope not – let’s hope for the best – that maybe one day, all of our futbol dreams will come true. Every single one of them. Or just the one, whichever. Stay positive, stay cool.

Battling a cold is never fun and sometimes the cold gets the better of you but you let it have its moment and then you move on (see episode). But when you’ve got the better of the cold, it’s all right! Life’s a beach, the afternoons are shinier, the mahjong is mahjongin’ and you maybe you take a step back and say, “Gun-DAMN, it’s good to be alive!”.

This week, we go to our happy place…the forest…while getting ready to ace our kanji proficiency test (with a little help from the Kanji Klub). Of course, the serenity of the forest is very conducive to studying. But we’ll celebrate with a round of pool and maybe some puzzles with friends. Who knows. But what we do know is that one part cop, one part astronaut = a policenaut. Yes, yes, yes!

From Virtua Fighter to Virtua Cop…from the neighborhood Home Depot to the Lowe’s across town…we once again stress the importance of chill music when doing your shopping and/or customizing your life in any aspect. Also, let’s be honest, the Western school system is a complete mess and you can’t expect kids to sit still for eight hours listening to outdated history lessons…at least, there are PLENTY of school-based simulation games to choose from to enhance whatever real-world school experience you had/have.

This week, we drop in on some of the leading authors of the “Book of Smooth VGM”, including Takeshi Abo, Katsuhiro Hayashi and Shinji Hose, as well as revisit a childhood favorite of little Hammock’s from Mario Paint. We once again admire the life and duty of the space fighter pilot and drop some Coca Cola knowledge. Are you one of 2,000,000 people who owned a Phillips 3DO system? If so, say hello!

Hammock’s back from his journeys afar and settling back into the smooth vibrations of the beach outside the KVGM studios. Thanks go out once again to Oke for filling in over the past two weeks and maybe…just maybe…KVGM “Pixel Vibrations” could make return somewhere in the future. For now, though, we discover that baseball RPGs really do exist and the naughty Akira Sato continues to bring the straight J-A-M-S from the even naughtier PC-98.

But it’s Saturday? That’s right, this is a special ‘early edition’ of the Last Wave as Hammock embarks on a little Hammock time. I’m currently inside an airport in New York City, which is nowhere near Aqua City, and I’m going even further from breezy Pacific Ocean. I’ll be back in two weeks for more jamzzzzzzz but in the meantime, we’ve got something special lined up for you, the listener, as part of KVGM’s new summer internship program. For now, enjoy the jams and I’ll catch you back on the beach in two weeks!
